Professional Development Opportunities

Steps to Request a Professional Development Opportunity

____ 1. Discuss your PD request with your building principal. This is to inform the Principal and get his/her approval for the request. All staff who attend an outside professional development event are expected to share their learning as the principal directs.

_____ 2. Complete the Application for Professional Development Funds by filling out the PD Request Form.

Be sure to link the flyer or agenda for the workshop, conference, or activity in the request. The approval process involves the following individuals: Building Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Associate Superintendent.

_______ 3. Follow your school’s procedures for requesting a substitute teacher, if necessary.

_____ 4. Central Office will make arrangements for conference registration and hotel reservations as needed. If your PD request is approved, the Assistant Superintendent will be in touch with you for next steps.

_____ 5. After attending a conference, submit the District Reimbursement Form with original receipts to your principal. Requests for reimbursement should be made in a timely manner, 7-10 days prior to a meeting of the Board of Education. Reimbursements are made after approval of bills during a board meeting, but board members receive information to review in advance of their meeting. If your information is not received by Central Office in time for the board packets to be sent out, reimbursement will be delayed until the following month’s board meeting.

_____ 6. Keep a copy of the agenda and other forms from the conference so you can accurately record the time you spent in professional development on the PD Log that all teachers submit at the end of the school year. Good documentation is important for district procedures, but you may also need documentation of professional development if you hold a type of certificate that requires renewal. Several types of certificates require verification by a district administrator that the teacher has participated in a specific number of hours of professional development.
